Batu Caves is a striking limestone hill and Hindu shrine just north of Kuala Lumpur, famous for the giant Lord Murugan statue and the long, colorful flight of steps up to the main Temple Cave. Expect to climb about 270 steep steps, keep your shoulders and knees covered out of respect, and be careful with bags and snacks because the macaque monkeys will try to grab loose items. The Temple Cave is free, but if you want a cave tour with conservation info, book the paid Dark Cave guided tour in advance. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and biggest crowds, and take the KTM Komuter to Batu Caves station for the simplest public transit route.
