Surtshellir is the longest and most famous lava cave in Iceland, named after a fire giant from Norse mythology. It's located in the Hallmundarhraun lava field in West Iceland and is often visited on self-drive tours. The cave has a fascinating history, with outlaws seeking refuge there in the past and plenty of folklore surrounding it. Legend has it that the fire giant himself lived in Surtshellir and even created the cave. Inside, you'll find an inner part called "The Ice Cave," where you can marvel at stunning ice formations. So if you're up for some adventure and want to explore a unique natural wonder, Surtshellir is definitely worth a visit!
