bericht van Aron Tómas Guðmannsson

Eldfell is a volcanic cone located on the Icelandic island of Heimaey. It formed unexpectedly in 1973 during a volcanic eruption, causing a major crisis for the island and leading to its temporary evacuation. The eruption resulted in the destruction of around 400 homes and threatened to close off the island's main source of income, the fishing harbor. However, the residents successfully cooled the advancing lava flow by pumping seawater onto it, saving the harbor. After the eruption, the islanders used the heat from the cooling lava flows to provide hot water and generate electricity. They also utilized the volcanic material to extend the airport runway and build new houses. Overall, Eldfell is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of volcanic activity and the resilience of the people who live in its shadow.
