Lupins in New Zealand

Every summer, the Mackenzie Basin bursts into colour when Russell lupins bloom across the fields and lake edges. From late November through December, these purple, pink, and blue wildflowers transform the landscapes around Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, and Twizel into some of the most photographed scenes in the country. They’re not native (and technically classed as invasive), but they’ve become an iconic sight for travellers chasing that postcard-perfect shot.

Quick Tips

• Best time: late November to mid-December is peak bloom.

• Where: Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, Twizel, and along the road to Mt Cook.

• Photography: sunrise and sunset light makes the colours pop.

• Be respectful: lupins grow on fragile riverbanks and private land - stick to paths where possible.

• Pair it with a visit to the Church of the Good Shepherd at Tekapo - lupins often bloom right by the stone church.
