Wharariki Beach is one of those places that looks almost too dramatic to be real, and yep, if it feels familiar, that’s because it’s the Windows screensaver. The Archway Islands rising out of the sea have become an iconic image of New Zealand’s wild coastline.

Getting there takes a bit of effort, a narrow gravel road followed by a 20 minute walk through rolling farmland and coastal dunes, but the reward is huge. At low tide, the reflections across the sand are unreal, caves open up at the base of cliffs, and you might even spot seal pups playing in the tidal pools 🦭. It feels completely remote, with hardly anyone else around.

  • Tips:

  • Go at low tide for the full reflections and cave access.

  • It’s often windy, pack a jacket, even on a sunny day.

  • Bring everything you need, there are no facilities.

  • Best visited at sunrise or sunset for that golden, moody light.
