Chopstick manners, Japanese "perfection" guide

This is a higher-level standard, even many Japanese don’t fully follow all of these but knowing them instantly elevates your impression.

Before you start

・If chopsticks feel difficult, ask for a fork or spoon
→ many places have them, just ask the staff


Strictly not acceptable (avoid these)

・sticking chopsticks upright into rice
→ resembles a funeral ritual

・passing food from chopstick to chopstick
→ also linked to funeral customs

・spear stabbing food (sashi-bashi)
→ using chopsticks like a fork is considered rude


Not preferred (try to avoid)

・licking chopsticks (neburi-bashi)
→ seen as unclean and childish

・dripping food or sauce (namida-bashi)
→ letting liquid fall while carrying food looks careless

・pointing with chopsticks
→ feels aggressive

・moving dishes with chopsticks
→ use your hands instead

・hovering over dishes while choosing (mayoi-bashi)
→ shows indecision


How to use them properly

・pick up food gently, don’t stab
・rest chopsticks when not in use
・use the opposite end when sharing food (if no serving utensils)
