If there’s one hike in Wanaka that you’ve seen all over Instagram, it’s this one — and trust me, the views really do live up to the hype. The track winds steadily up the mountain until you’re looking out over Lake Wānaka, the surrounding peaks, and Mount Aspiring in the distance. It’s a proper workout, but so worth it.
The Stats
🥾 Distance: 16 km return
⛰️ Elevation gain: 1,250 m
⏱️ Time: 5–7 hours return
🔄 Route type: Out-and-back
Good to Know
The climb is relentless but not technical — take it slow and steady.
The famous photo spot isn’t at the summit, but about ¾ of the way up. Don’t stop there though — the actual summit is even better!
Expect crowds — this is one of the most popular hikes in NZ.
Where to Park
The Roy’s Peak carpark is about a 5-minute drive from Wanaka township on Mount Aspiring Road. It fills up fast in summer, so if you’re aiming for sunrise, get there well before dawn.
My tip: If you want the same epic views with fewer people, consider the nearby Isthmus Peak Track — it’s a bit longer but far less crowded. I've got this saved on here too with more details :)
