Ashcroft Ghost Town is an abandoned mining town located in Pitkin County, Colorado. Founded in the 1880s during a silver mining boom, the town quickly grew to a population of around 2,000 people with saloons, schools, and newspapers. However, as the silver deposits ran out and people moved to nearby Aspen, Ashcroft's prosperity declined. By the early 20th century, only a few residents remained, and the town eventually became a ghost town. In the 1930s, interest in the area was renewed due to winter sports, and during World War II, the U.S. Army used Ashcroft for mountaineering training. Today, the town remains as a historic site with a few buildings still standing as a reminder of its past.
