Trafalgar Square is a popular public square located in the City of Westminster, Central London. It was established as early as the 19th century and was formerly known as Charing Cross. Named after the Battle of Trafalgar, a British victory in the Napoleonic War, it is home to Nelson's Column at its centre which is surrounded by four monumental bronze lions. The square encompasses the National Gallery on the North side, Canada House and South Africa House on either side of the column and St Martin-in-the-Fields Church to the east. Throughout the year, the square plays host to numerous events such as Christmas Celebrations, anti-war protests, campaigns against climate change, and serves as a centre for celebrations on New Year’s Eve.
