Carrara is known for its white gold--marble harvested from its quarries leaving gigantic white slashes in majestic mountains. Perhaps you should think of visiting them before the mountains are turned into stubs.

The exploitation of this sought-after stone has been used to build monuments such as Sant'Andrea Cathedral since the Roman Empire times. Visitors to Carrara can admire the grandiose façade of the cathedral decorated with slabs of Luna and black Colonnata marble, visit Malaspina castle, and explore the Civic Marble Museum to learn more about Carrara's history.

Nearby, the breathtaking Apuan Alps Regional Park and Marina di Carrara provide incredible panoramas ranging from the white peaks to the Tyrrhenian Coast. For food lovers, the local product that fueled the quarrymen, Colonnata lardo IGP, is the specialty. Read more about it in The Lardo Tales.

There are plenty of events throughout the year, such as the Historical Re-enactment of using sleds to get the marble off the mountain called the Lizzatura in August and the White Carrara Festival during summer months.
