Accessible via the Moose-Wilson Road, this mile-high lake is surrounded by picturesque mountains and offers various hiking trails for all levels. You can take a dip at Jumping Rock or simply relax on the shores while soaking in the beauty of this secluded paradise.

To start, there’s either the option to hike from the Death Canyon Trailhead (5 miles roundtrip) or there’s the option to start from the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve at roughly 6 miles roundtrip, but flatter.

On the northeast side of the lake, you’ll see a rock rising about 20 feet, depending on the water level. It’s a popular swimming hole for locals and visitors to cool off during hot days. The rock is located where the pin is on the map.

Keep in mind that Phelps Lake is a glacial lake and water temperature often dips below 40°F.
