Múlagljúfur Canyon genuinely feels like stepping into Jurassic Park; it is hands down the most beautiful place we have EVER been to and easily the highlight of our entire trip. If you only have time to visit one place in the country, this is where we would tell you to go.
The trail itself can be uneven and very muddy, and you’ll need to cross a small river along the way. We were able to hop across the rocks without getting our feet wet, but sturdy waterproof shoes are definitely recommended. There is only a small parking area and no facilities, and some sections of the trail run close to very steep drop-offs, so be sure to use caution, especially after rain.
You don’t have to hike all the way to the end to get incredible views, but if you’re up for the full hike, it is absolutely worth it.
Hike details to Hangandifoss Waterfall:
Distance: 4.4 miles round-trip
Elevation Gain: 1,263ft
Estimated Time: 2.5-3 hours
If you plan to stop often for photos or take in the views, allow extra time. For reference, we spent about 4 hours total here.
