Bericht van

A cool underground walk through ochre tunnels turns this former mine into one of the most striking heritage sites in the Luberon. The scale surprises you first, then the colors and the story of the workers who carved these galleries by hand.

The Mines de Bruoux are in Gargas, in the Vaucluse, near Apt and the famous ochre landscapes of the Luberon. The guided route takes you through part of a 40 km underground network, with galleries reaching up to 15 meters high. It feels like entering a mineral cathedral shaped by both geology and human labor.

The visit explains how ochre formed millions of years ago, how mining developed here from the 19th century, and how Gargas became one of the key ochre sites in Provence. Today, the experience lasts about 1 hour and must be booked in advance by phone. Inside, the temperature stays around 10°C, even in summer, and photos are prohibited for safety reasons.

👉 Local Tip: Bring a warm layer even during a heatwave, arrive 15 to 20 minutes early, and pair the visit with nearby ochre stops around Roussillon, Gargas, or Apt for a full Luberon color-themed day.
