Domes Beach (Playa Domes) is one of Rincón’s most iconic and storied surf spots.

The beach takes its name from the large, unmistakable white dome structure visible from the shoreline — the remains of the BONUS Nuclear Power Plant, a experimental boiling nuclear superheater reactor that operated briefly in the 1960s before being decommissioned.

Domes is a world-class right-hand reef break, consistently ranked among the best waves in the Caribbean. It produces long, powerful, well-shaped rides that work best on medium to large northwest swells, typically from October through April. The wave peels beautifully along the reef, offering surfers long, fast rides with the possibility of barreling sections. It’s best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers due to the reef below and the power of the waves on bigger days.

The beach is a wonderful spot even if you don’t surf. The scenery is dramatic, the energy is infectious, and watching skilled surfers work the reef break from the shore is deeply entertaining. It’s also a peaceful place to walk, read, or simply sit and absorb the atmosphere.

The rocky reef areas around Domes offer decent snorkeling when the surf is calm, with tropical fish and coral formations visible in the clear water.

Like most of Rincón’s west-facing beaches, Domes delivers stunning sunsets.
