Yasaka Shrine sits right on the edge of Gion and is one of the easiest places to add into your Kyoto plans because it’s open all day and feels completely different depending on when you visit.

During the day it’s calm and spacious, but at night the lanterns light up and the whole area feels a bit more atmospheric.

It’s less about ticking off a big attraction and more about wandering through the grounds, especially if you’re already exploring Gion or walking toward Higashiyama.

Things to know before you go:

  • Entry is free and the grounds are open 24 hours

  • Best visited in the evening when the lanterns are lit

  • Located between Gion and Maruyama Park, so it’s easy to combine with both

  • Look out for the main dance stage covered in lanterns

  • A good rest stop if you’re walking between Gion and Kiyomizu-dera

  • Can get busy during festivals like Gion Matsuri in July
