Most people underestimate how big New Zealand is!

The South Island and the North Island are the 12th and 14th largest islands in the world, even larger than the United Kingdom. However, despite its larger size, New Zealand is much less populated. Over 70% of New Zealand is unpopulated, and 30% of our total land area is legally protected conservation land.

Because of the country's size, you won't be able to see "everything" while you're here. I've been travelling for years and have only scratched the surface!

In this guide, I'll help you determine how much of New Zealand you can expect to see in your given timeframe and whether you should choose the North Island, the South Island, or both!

How long should you spend in NZ?

I always recommend you come here for as long as possible (I know, shocker). If you want to see 'the whole country' (i.e. a taster of what the major spots on both islands have to offer), you really need at least 4-8 weeks. However, that doesn't mean you can't enjoy NZ to the max; it just means you will need to tailor your expectations.

If you're short on time, I'd recommend choosing either the North Island or the South Island (both are phenomenal in their own right) or flying between some locations to reduce travel times. A general rule of thumb is if you're visiting both islands, most travellers spend 30% of their time on the North Island and the rest on the South Island.

You won't see everything (but that's okay)

The number one tip I'd give you is not to get hung up on "not seeing everything". You'd need to travel across Aotearoa for years and years to see (almost) everything she has to offer. There is no way you'll be able to do everything you want to do in 2 weeks AND have a relaxing holiday.

So, take it slow, try to roll with the punches, and choose 5-6 non-negotiable locations/activities. I promise you'll have a much more enjoyable experience.
