You can find the Rakaia Gorge just an hour outside Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island. It's one of those places you must see to believe, and I find it impossible to get my head around the fact that beautiful scenery like this is so close to a major city!

The water flowing through the braided river below us was mind-blowing. Its bright blue colour is a result of the minerals from glacial melt being forced through this narrow canyon before continuing to the ocean. The towering cliffs, rolling hills, and bright blue water make this spot a dream for walkers and photographers.

The best way to see it is by walking the Rakaia Gorge Walkway, which follows the northern bank of the river. It starts at the Rakaia Gorge Bridge, right by where Discovery Jet operates. There's free parking and toilets here, but they haven't had toilet paper on my three visits, so it's best to bring your own! The trail winds through native bush, and you'll see the gorge through the trees as you climb upwards. Call me crazy (or wistful - you choose!) but I thought the view of the trees in front of the bright blue gorge looked a bit like the gorgeous photos you see of the Canadian Rockies.

The entire walkway is 10.4 km long (return) and takes around 3-4 hours. However, if you don't have enough time, you can stop at the first lookout point and return via the same track.

Note: This walkway crosses private farmland. Please remember to respect the landowners by keeping to the track. Dogs or horses are not permitted.
