Covering 43km of technical beach and forest terrain, the challenging North Coast Trail features almost constant obstacles like rope climbs, deep mud, giant tree roots, slippery cobblestones, fallen trees and rocky headlands.
But the challenge is only half of the story. There are many good reasons to brave this backpacking trail, including regular wildlife sightings, amazing beach camping spots, lush old-growth forests, plenty of solitude, incredible Pacific Ocean sunsets and more.
Most North Coast Trail hikers spend 4 to 5 days traversing the main trail, camping at some of the seven campgrounds along the way. There are many possible extensions, up to 8 or 9 days (Nels Bight, Cape Scott Lighthouse, San Josef Bay and more).
