If you're looking for a relaxing day on Lake Maggiore, the Brissago Islands make a wonderful half-day trip from Ascona or Locarno.

The main island is home to a beautiful botanical garden filled with palm trees, bamboo forests, giant cacti, colorful flowers, and plants from all over the world. Thanks to Ticino's mild climate, it feels surprisingly tropical—more like Italy or the Mediterranean than Switzerland.
