Omarama is best known for its Clay Cliffs, and honestly, that’s the main reason to stop here. The drive to the cliffs is via a short gravel road, easy to manage if you take it slow, and once you’re there, you’ll want about 45 minutes to 1 hour to wander and explore properly. The formations feel other-worldly, especially in spring, when you’ll often see lupins blooming along the road and around the area, adding colour to the otherwise raw, rugged landscape. Entry is $10 per person and cash is preferred, so make sure you’re prepared. Wear good walking shoes, the ground is uneven and dusty, and can get slippery after rain. Everything else Omarama is known for, like stargazing or hot tubs, is a nice bonus, but the Clay Cliffs are the real highlight, quiet, dramatic, and one of those places that feels untouched and very New Zealand.
