Grassi Lakes is a must-do for anyone visiting Canmore or the Bow Valley. This short but scenic hike leads to two stunning turquoise lakes beneath dramatic limestone cliffs — and it offers a perfect blend of forested trail, waterfall views, and a big payoff at the end.
The hike is just 3.2 km round trip with about 210 metres of elevation gain, making it accessible for most fitness levels, including families with kids. There are two routes: the “Easy” trail follows a gravel road through the forest, while the “More Difficult” trail takes you up steeper terrain with better views, including a beautiful waterfall and expansive lookouts over Canmore and the Bow Valley. If you're comfortable with some rock steps and steeper sections, the more difficult trail is definitely the more scenic choice — and you can always take the easy trail back down.
At the top, you’re rewarded with the crystal-clear Grassi Lakes, famous for their vibrant blue-green hues caused by mineral-rich mountain runoff. The stillness of the lakes, combined with the towering cliffs above (often dotted with climbers), makes this a tranquil and photogenic spot to relax before heading back down.
