The Sentinel Pass hike is one of the most breathtaking trails in the Canadian Rockies, offering hikers a rewarding challenge with astounding panoramic views. Starting from Moraine Lake, the trail winds through a dense forest before opening up into the stunning Larch Valley, famous for its golden fall colors when the larch trees turn vibrant yellow—a spectacle that draws hikers from all over.

From there, a series of steep switchbacks lead up to Sentinel Pass, perched between Pinnacle Mountain and Mount Temple, where you'll be rewarded with sweeping views of both Larch Valley and Paradise Valley on the other side. Sentinel Pass is a must-do for those seeking one of the most iconic hikes in Banff.

Most hikers stop at the top of pass, but it is possible to hike to Lake Louise. However, for fit and experienced hikers, the adventure doesn’t have to stop at the pass. A rugged and steep trail descends down the backside of Sentinel Pass into Paradise Valley, eventually leading to Lake Louise. This is a big, demanding hike that requires strong navigation skills, endurance, and proper preparation, but it offers a truly unforgettable backcountry experience. We don't recommend it to most visitors.
