If you want to get your first climb in Banff, then a via ferrata is a tremendous idea. A via ferrata dates back to World War I and the Italian Dolomites, where the Italian army built assisted climbing paths through the mountains to move troops around with limited climbing experience. The “iron paths,” direct translation, are built across mountains with steel cables, rings, and ladders along cliff faces, making climbing far more accessible for those with limited experience.

Mt. Norquay sits just above the town and has the only via ferrata in the Rocky Mountain National Park. It offers tremendous views over the Bow Valley, Mount Rundle, and Tunnel Mountain. The view is iconic from the top of the chairlift and the via ferrata.f

There are two routes to choose from: an easier one and a more difficult one. Beginners can complete both routes. However, we suggest decent physical fitness, as you need upper and lower body strength to climb the via ferrata. This is a great option for getting active with older kids.
