The Eldheimar Museum is an exciting and immersive destination, located in Vestmannaeyjar (the Westman Islands). Get fascinating insight into the 1973 eruption on the island and its devastating effects on what was then a thriving fishing community of 5,300 residents. There are interactive exhibits to explore, such as a wheel for visitors to understand how lava spread across the town; an actual resurrected home; an audio guide in several languages detailing events before, during, and after the eruption; and a movie screening to finish off the tour. Fun for kids too!

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: A volcano museum about the 1973 eruption in the Westman Islands

  • Best season: Open from May 4 until October 14.

  • Opening hours: 11am - 5pm

  • Nice to know: Take your time there and I definitely recommend the audio tour.
