Do places in Rome accept card or cash?

Most restaurants, cafés, shops and attractions accept cards. It’s still useful to carry a small amount of cash for markets, small cafés or quick purchases like coffee or gelato.

What is a “coperto” on restaurant bills?

Coperto is a cover charge added per person at many restaurants in Italy. It usually ranges from €1–€3 and covers bread, table setting and service.

Do you tip in Rome?

Tipping is not expected in Rome. Locals usually round up the bill or leave small change if they are happy with the service.

How do cafés work in Rome?

Coffee prices change depending on where you drink it. Standing at the bar is cheaper, while sitting at a table costs more because table service is included.

How much walking should I expect in Rome?

Most visitors walk between 18000–25000 steps per day. Many major attractions are close together but the city is large and best explored on foot.

Is there a dress code for churches and the Vatican?

Yes. Shoulders and knees generally need to be covered when entering churches and Vatican City sites like St Peter’s Basilica.

Do I need to book attractions in advance?

Yes for popular attractions such as the Colosseum, Vatican Museums and St Peter’s Dome climb. Timed tickets are common and often sell out.

Is Uber available in Rome?

Uber exists but mainly offers premium services and tends to be more expensive. Most travellers use official taxis, walking or public transport.

Is public transport easy in Rome?

The metro is simple but limited, mainly connecting key tourist areas. Buses and trams cover more areas, but walking is the most common way to explore.

What time do people eat dinner in Rome?

Dinner usually starts later than in many countries, with most restaurants becoming busy from around 7:30pm onwards.

Is the tap water safe to drink in Rome?

Yes. Public drinking fountains are found throughout the city and provide safe drinking water.

Is Rome safe for tourists?

Rome is generally safe, but pickpocketing can happen in crowded areas such as metros, major attractions and busy squares.
