Flexibility – Build in Buffer Time

JAPAN, Japan

Even the best-planned Japan itinerary can hit snags. Weather changes quickly, especially in spring and summer, and popular attractions sometimes close unexpectedly.

Trains are famously punctual, but delays do happen. Adding buffer time between long-distance connections ensures you won’t miss an activity because of a late arrival. When booking restaurants or tours, avoid scheduling them too close to your arrival time in a new city.

Flexibility also leaves space for spontaneous discoveries—a hidden shrine you stumble upon, a seasonal festival you didn’t know was happening, or a small ramen shop that smells too good to pass by. Some of the best travel memories come from these unplanned moments.
