Ōfuna Kannonji is a unique temple located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It stands 25 meters/82 feet tall and weighs nearly 2,000 tons, and beautifully depicts the East Asian bodhisattva Guanyin or Kannon. Work began on the temple in 1929 by the Sōtō school of Zen and was finally completed in 1960. The statue itself contains a small museum and shrine, both of which are open for viewing. One can find stones from ground zero Hiroshima and Nagasaki to commemorate those who died from the atomic bombs that were dropped there. Every autumn, the temple hosts the Yume-Kannon Festival, which provides foreigners living in Japan with an opportunity to come together and share their belief in Kannon through traditional song, dance, and stalls of food from different cultures. All are welcome to visit this unique place and soak in the serene atmosphere!
