Kamo Shrine, located in northeast Kyoto along the Kamo River, consists of two shrines: Kamigamo Shrine and Shimogamo Shrine. These shrines were built to ward off demons from entering the city due to traditional beliefs about the northeast corner bringing misfortune. The annual Aoi Matsuri festival, one of Kyoto's oldest, takes place here with horse races and archery demonstrations. Kamigamo Shrine honors the kami of thunder, while Shimogamo Shrine is dedicated to the kami mother. Despite being twinned, they are not next to each other but serve as protective barriers against evil spirits. The shrines have a rich history dating back to the early Heian period and are designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
