Otagi Nenbutsuji is a temple park with an incredible history and 1200 unique Rakan statues to explore! This hidden gem is located in Arashiyama and rewards adventurous visitors with its stunning atmosphere. With the original temple existing as early as 770, it has since been moved to its current home and renovated over time. Kocho Nishmura was appointed head priest of the temple in 1955 and it was through his work and guidance that many unique statues have been added to the grounds of the temple. These “rakan” statues represent Buddha’s disciples and each one is incredibly unique and often have humorous expressions or poses. From one with a tennis racket to two sharing a cup of sake, there's something for everyone at Otagi Nenbutsuji. You don't want to miss out on this hidden gem!
