Franz Josef is the crown jewel of Glacier Country on the West Coast of the South Island. If you want to explore while you're there and would like to treat yourself to something more than one of the free walking tracks, Franz Josef Wilderness Tours should be at the top of your bucket list!
Their packages are the perfect way to explore the UNESCO World Heritage site, and they offer a range of guided adventures, including kayak tours on Lake Mapourika, boat cruises, and adrenaline-filled quad bike tours.
Their prices start from around $99 NZD per person for a kayak tour and range depending on the activity. They have experienced guides, so you'll know you're in safe hands, and an amazing focus on sustainability and eco-tourism so you can feel good about treating yourself to an experience of a lifetime.
How to get there
I think the best way to travel to Franz Josef is by car. The drive takes around 2 hours from Hokitika or 5 hours from Queenstown. There is no public transport, but other tour companies will take you to the West Coast. However, you won’t get to choose where you stop, and you may not have time for an overnight trip. So, if you can, rent a car for your NZ adventure!
