Te Rotorua nui ā Kahumatamomoe (Lake Rotorua) is the second-largest lake on the North Island. It’s fed by a mix of rivers and geothermal streams, giving it a distinct dark green-yellow colour due to its high sulfur and volcanic mineral content.

At the heart of the lake sits Mokoia Island, the most famous lake island in the country. This island is tapu (sacred) to Māori and is tied to the love story of Hinemoa and Tutanekai.

Personal tip: If you're looking for things to do here, there’s a lovely, easy 1.5-hour trail along the waterfront, passing through the Whakarewarewa Forest Park, home to the famous Redwoods Tree Walk.
