This is one of New Zealand’s most popular attractions and a HUGE drawcard for tourists worldwide.
Just outside Matamata on the North Island, you’ll find the Hobbiton Movie Set, where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies came to life. As I wandered through the 12-acre movie set, I felt like I'd stepped straight into the world of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins. I never wanted to leave! If you’re a LOTR fan, a movie buff, or just love a little magic, Hobbiton™ is a must-do when you're in Aotearoa.
About the tour
The only way to see Hobbiton is with a fully guided Hobbiton Movie Set Tour. During your tour, your guide will teach you about the movie’s production and lead you through the Shire, where you’ll see Hobbit Holes and Bagshot Row. To top it all off, you’ll cross the iconic double-arch stone bridge and step into the famous Green Dragon Inn for a glass of Middle-earth’s finest ale, cider, or ginger beer.
If you're looking for an extra special experience, Hobbiton hosts events like long lunches, festive parties, and banquet feasts, which are perfect if you have extra time (and budget) to spare.
Do I need to book Hobbiton in advance?
