This is one of New Zealand’s most popular attractions and a HUGE drawcard for tourists worldwide.

Just outside Matamata on the North Island, you’ll find the Hobbiton Movie Set, where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies came to life. As I wandered through the 12-acre movie set, I felt like I'd stepped straight into the world of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins. I never wanted to leave! If you’re a LOTR fan, a movie buff, or just love a little magic, Hobbiton™ is a must-do when you're in Aotearoa.

About the tour

The only way to see Hobbiton is with a fully guided Hobbiton Movie Set Tour. During your tour, your guide will teach you about the movie’s production and lead you through the Shire, where you’ll see Hobbit Holes and Bagshot Row.  To top it all off, you’ll cross the iconic double-arch stone bridge and step into the famous Green Dragon Inn for a glass of Middle-earth’s finest ale, cider, or ginger beer.

If you're looking for an extra special experience, Hobbiton hosts events like long lunches, festive parties, and banquet feasts, which are perfect if you have extra time (and budget) to spare.

Do I need to book Hobbiton in advance?

Hobbiton™ is extremely popular, and in peak travel season (December to February), tours can be booked out three months in advance. While last-minute tickets do come up from time to time, I recommend buying yours as soon as you finalise your travel plans!

How much does it cost to visit Hobbiton™?

  • Adult: $120

  • Child (9-16 years): $60

  • Family Pass (2 adults, 2 children): $306

  • Special events & dining packages start at $158 for the Tour & Lunch Combo

How to get there

Hobbiton™ tours depart from two locations in Matamata, a small town 2 hours from Auckland or 1 hour from Rotorua. From here, tours leave from:

  • The Shire’s Rest – 501 Buckland Road, Hinuera, Matamata

  • Matamata i-SITE – 45 Broadway, Matamata
