Franz Josef is one of the most incredible places I’ve ever been. As we explored and saw the famous Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, I found it difficult to comprehend that this area was connected to Aoraki/Mount Cook, which starkly contrasts with the native bush that covers Glacier Country. It's unbelievable that this massive river of ice starts high in the rugged Southern Alps and winds down into lush rainforest!
If you’ve ever dreamed of walking on a glacier, this is the place to do it. Franz Josef Glacier Guides are the West Coast's most trusted and experienced glacier tour guides. They'll take you by helicopter to Fox or Franz Josef Glaciers and provide all the equipment and expertise to help you safely explore spectacular ice caves, arches, and other glacier formations.
How much does it cost?
I’m not going to sugarcoat it, this experience isn’t cheap. A heli-hike on Franz Josef Glacier costs $795 per person, regardless of age. But if there’s one splurge that’s 100% worth it, it’s this. We didn't do this tour when we visited (but I feel I can recommend it after extensive research!) and have kicked ourselves ever since.
What’s included:
Scenic helicopter flight over the glacier valley
Up to 2.5 hours on the ice, exploring deep blue crevasses, ice caves, and towering formations
Small group experience (1 guide per 11 people) for a more personal adventure
Expert glacier guide
Total experience: Around 4 hours (from check-in to finish)
There are also guided eco hikes up both glacier valleys, which allow visitors to explore the stunning environment safely while getting close to the glacier without walking on the ice.
If you already know your New Zealand itinerary, book your hike ASAP. These trips fill up fast, and most people come to the West Coast just for this experience (honestly, can you blame them?).
