Isthmus Peak Track is one of Wānaka's most underrated hikes, and honestly, I don’t know why more people don’t talk about it. Sitting between Lake Wānaka and Lake Hāwea, this trail gives you some of the most jaw-dropping views in the region, without the big crowds you’ll find at Roys Peak. It's also a wonderful alternative to Roy's Peak if you happen to visit Wānaka between late October and November, as the track closes for lambing season.
Like Roy's Peak, this track isn't messing around and wastes no time getting steep! It winds up through rolling farmland, and as you get higher, Lake Hāwea slowly comes into view behind you. Unlike some hikes, where you spend ages in the bush before getting a glimpse of the scenery, Isthmus Peak boasts incredible views all the way!
The stats of this track are very similar to Roy's Peak, so don't expect it to be an easy alternative! It's 16 km return and has a diabolical 1,100m elevation gain. It's not easy but the track is well-maintained, there's lots of places to stop and you can take your time. It usually takes between six and seven hours, depending on how often you stop to catch your breath, take photos (which, if you're like me, will be a lot).
The final push to the summit is where the real magic happens. Reaching the top feels like stepping into a postcard—Lake Wānaka on one side, Lake Hāwea on the other, and an endless stretch of rugged mountain peaks in the distance. I could cry at the thought of it.
Because the track is fully exposed, the weather plays a big role in your experience. It's always best to check the forecast and bring a rain jacket, hat, sunblock, layers and plenty of water.
Note: Don’t forget that the track is closed each year for lambing season so make sure to check DOCs website before planning your trip.
