When I picture a classic Kiwi beach, Opito Bay is one of the first places that comes to mind.
Some people call Opito Bay a “hidden gem,” but to be honest, most Kiwis know about it. That said, it’s a bit off the beaten track, so it doesn’t get quite as crowded as some of the other Coromandel beaches. In summer (especially December–February), parking can be a bit tight, so I recommend arriving early. However, the bay is so big that it never feels packed, even on a busy day.
If you have extra time, you should visit Crayfish Bay and Otama Beach nearby too :)
Know before you go
There are toilets, but no shops, so I recommend bringing all your food with you
If you need to stock up, Kauaotunu Village has a general store
If you want a sit-down meal, I love Luke's Kitchen. It's one of the most popular places to eat in the area, but you can't book a table. It gets so busy here in the summer, but definitely try your luck!
How to get there
Follow State Highway 25, pass through Kuaotunu Village, then take Blackjack Road past Otama Beach. Keep driving along Blackjack Road until you hit Opito Road. The last stretch is a mix of sealed and gravel road, but it’s well-maintained and fine for regular cars. Once you arrive, you can park along the roadside or in the large open area on the right.
