Wairēinga Falls (also known as Bridal Veil Falls) is a stunning waterfall on the North Island's West Coast, just 15 minutes from Raglan. It’s my favourite waterfall in the region, and I bet you can see why! The 55-meter falls are surrounded by ultra-green, native bush that makes you feel like you’ve walked straight into a scene from Jurassic Park.
The best way to see Wairēinga Falls
Wairēinga Falls is accessible via three viewpoints along a well-maintained walking track.
The upper viewpoint shows the entire drop of the waterfall as it plunges into the pool below. There’s lush, native bush as far as your eyes can see, and once you visit, I’m sure you’ll agree that the landscape feels almost unreal (or, at least, like a scene from Jurassic Park!)
From the top, you can walk down the track to the second viewpoint for a closer look at the falls. This is my favourite viewpoint! Continue on the path down 260 steep steps until you reach the bottom, where there is a jaw-dropping view directly across the pool and up to the falls. The waterfall’s height and perfect curtain-like descent make it one of New Zealand’s most scenic waterfalls and a must-visit in the Waikato region.
How to get there
Unfortunately, there is no public transport out to the falls, so you must have your own vehicle. From Raglan, it's a 15 minute drive along Te Mata Road. If you're coming from Hamilton, head west on State Highway 23 for around 50km.
Know before you go
The track upper viewing platform is accessible for all fitness levels. However, getting to the base of the falls requires a short walk down 260 steep stairs, which may not be suitable for everyone. These steps feel like a lot less on the way down than they do on the way back up!
You cannot swim as the water quality does not meet health standards, and you might get sick.
The plants and native bush around Bridal Veil Falls is protected so please don't climb on the rocks or try and abseil.
