Visiting Kai Iwi Lakes feels like you've been transported to a tropical island. Except you don't have to leave Aotearoa to get there. The first time I visited was in the winter, and even though the weather was dreary, I couldn’t believe how blue it was!

There are two lakeside campgrounds to choose from. Pine Beach is the slightly fancier option, with hot showers and a shop in summer. Promenade Point is a bit quieter but still has flushing toilets and an accessible bathroom.

There are no powered sites available at Kai Iwi Lakes, and staying between $15 and $25 per person, per night. If you plan to visit in summer, book well in advance!
