When it comes to breathtaking views in Northland, the Duke's Nose (Kairara Rocks) rules them all. This walk combines everything I love: hiking, crystal-clear waters, and countless photography opportunities. The effort-to-reward ratio is unreal, and once you reach the top, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported from Aotearoa to Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay.
Track overview
Difficulty: Moderate (with some "rock climbing")
Length: 11km return
Time: 3-4 hours
The track begins at the end of Campbell Road, Totora North and starts up an old 4wd road. After around 1.5km, you'll come to a signpost for the Wairakau Stream Track and start walking through native bush and past the harbour.
This section combines everything I love about Northland: native bush, endless blue water and sailboats as far as the eye can see. There are two small stream crossings along the trail, and you might need to take your boots off, especially if there has been a lot of rain.
Once you reach the Lane Cove Hut, it's another 500m to the top of Kairara Rocks (approx 45 minutes). This part of the track includes two sections of cliff face, and you'll pull yourself up using the grab rails. But it’s not too difficult, especially if you have a head for heights and some decent upper body strength.
We stopped at the top of the Duke’s Nose for half an hour to have lunch (talk about a good picnic spot!) before heading back down the same track and returning to the car.
Parking
There's parking available at the trailhead. However, it’s very limited, as there is no official car park available. So, I’d recommend starting your walk early.
