The Waitangi Treaty Grounds are Aotearoa’s most important historical site and are a tūrangawaewae (a place to stand, where a person feels strong and at home) for all New Zealanders.

This is where the signing of He Whakaputanga (the Declaration of Independence) took place in 1835. Then, in 1840, Māori chiefs and the British Crown came together to sign Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi).

Everyone should visit Waitangi at some point during their travels, and understanding Aotearoa's history will allow you to appreciate and connect with the country so much more.

On your visit to Waitangi, your tour guide will take you around the grounds where you will hear stories and learn about the events that have shaped Aotearoa as we know it today.

How much does it cost?

Entry to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is $70, or $35 for New Zealand Residents and includes:

  • Informative guided tour around Waitangi Treaty Grounds (50 minutes)

  • Māori cultural experience (30 minutes)

  • Full access to New Zealand's most important historic site, including all heritage buildings and the world's largest ceremonial waka.

  • Entry to Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi

  • Entry to Te Rau Aroha Museum of the Price of Citizenship
