In my opinion, Pūrākaunui Bay DOC Campsite is the best campsite in The Catlins. The campsite sits directly in front of the beach and boasts some of the best views in the region. You'll go to sleep listening to the waves, wake up surrounded by rugged coastline and sip your morning coffee while gazing out at the ocean. It doesn't get much better than that!

You're well and truly off the grid, but that's what I love most about it. Relax, disconnect, and, if you're lucky, you might spot seals or sea lions, which often visit the area. If you see them, be respectful and keep your distance. Remember, this area is their home, not yours.

There are 40 non-powered sites here with very limited facilities. There are no showers, cell phone reception, or flushing toilets. However, the views more than make up for the lack of hot water!

How much does it cost?

The campsite is very popular but never too crowded. However, I recommend booking your site in advance via the DOC website, especially if you plan on travelling in peak season. Prices are very reasonable; one night costs just $10 per adult or $5 per child. It's worth noting that you can use your DOC Campsite Pass here! I recommend getting one if you plan to camp or travel around New Zealand for a while!
