The Remarkables Access Road is a beautiful mountain drive that offers stunning views above the clouds. In winter, thousands of people head up to the Remarkables Ski Field for skiing and snowboarding. During summer, it transforms into the gateway to some of the region’s best hiking trails, like Lake Alta.

The 13km road starts just off State Highway 6, around 20 minutes from Queenstown. It’s steep and winding but very well-maintained. The road is usually open year-round, but I always say it’s a good idea to carry snow chains—even in summer—since Queenstown’s weather can be unpredictable and surprise you with icy conditions.

There’s a $15 toll you’ll need to pay at the base of the road (credit card only), so make sure you’re ready for that before starting the drive
