Akaroa is a unique little town on the Banks Peninsula near Christchurch. It's most famous for being the only French town in New Zealand, which means there's plenty of European influence and delish food. I ate more pastries here than anywhere else on our whole two-week trip.

While you're here, the Ōnawe Peninsula track is only 3km return but has really beautiful views over the harbour. You also have to visit the Akaroa Head Scenic Reserve and see the iconic lighthouse!

If you want a memory that'll last forever, book a cruise with Black Cat Cruises, which will take you to see Hector’s dolphins. They're one of the smallest and rarest dolphins in the world and are found almost exclusively off the South Island.
