The Mount Te Aroha Summit Track is a short but tough hike to the highest point in the Kaimai Ranges on the North Island. This is one of those walks where “moderately challenging” really means “relentless uphill.” The track climbs almost a kilometre in elevation over just 3.9 km, so expect steep inclines, rocky terrain, and very few flat sections. But it’s as rewarding as it is challenging, and if you’ve got a decent fitness level, you’ll love it. Remember to pack your lunch for the top. You’ll want to spend some time there taking in the views!
Track overview
Difficulty: Moderate
Length: 7.8km return
Time: It took us 4 hours, but AllTrails says 4 to 6 hours, depending on your fitness level.
The trail follows orange markers through dense native bush, past moss-covered trees that look like something out of a fairy tale, and over rugged terrain. Suddenly, you’ll pop out at the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with insane 360-degree views over the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. On a clear day, you can see as far as Mount Maunganui, the Coromandel Peninsula, and down to Rotorua. You might even spot Ruapehu, Ngāuruhoe, and Taranaki in the distance if you're lucky.
Return to Te Aroha via the same track for the most direct route. If you’re up for a longer adventure, take the Tui Mine Track for a loop walk or go via Waiorongomai Saddle and Tui Saddle for an even bigger day out.
Know before you go
The summit is nearly a kilometre above sea level, so the weather can be unpredictable. Even if it’s warm in town, it can be icy up top. Pack warm layers and a waterproof jacket, and don’t forget your lunch! We did this walk in May 2024, and I sat at the top in a puffer jacket and beanie and was STILL freezing. I also recommend wearing hiking boots with good grip, as the track is rough, steep and slippery in some places.
How to get there
The Te Aroha Summit Track is located 1 hour and 50 minutes from Auckland and around 1 hour from Hamilton and Tauranga. You'll need your car to get here, as there is no public transport. Once you arrive in Te Aroha, you'll find plenty of free parking on Whitaker Street near the i-SITE. From there, it's a few minutes walk to the trailhead. If you need last-minute snacks, you'll find a Countdown/Woolworths supermarket over the road.
