Hidden in the lush rainforest of the Catlins is Purakaunui Falls, one of New Zealand’s most photographed waterfalls. This easy 5-10 minute walk leads through beautiful beech and podocarp forest to a viewing platform overlooking the iconic three-tiered cascade.

If you can, I highly recommend coming after a bit of rain. Winter is a very wet and rainy time in New Zealand. So, if you’ve come in the off-season, you’re lucky because this is when the falls are most impressive! If you have time, you should combine your visit to Purakaunui Falls with other nearby gems like Matai Falls or Cathedral Cave (make sure to check the tide times).
