The Milford Sound Lookout Track is one of the most popular walks in Fiordland National Park.
One of the reasons it's so well loved is that it's among the easiest and most accessible walks in the area. It offers stunning views of Milford Sound and the surrounding mountains. The effort-to-reward ratio is off the charts, and once you're at the top, you'll see the iconic Mitre Peak, which rises over 1,600 meters above sea level, native bush, and dramatic cliffs surrounding the fiord.
Track overview
Difficulty: Easy
Length: 400m return
Time: 20-30 minutes (including lots of time to take photos!)
The track begins at the Milford Sound Visitor Centre and climbs upwards through beech forest before you pop out to panoramic views of Milford Sound and the surrounding mountains. This is an out-and-back track, so once you've taken in the view, you'll return down the way you came.
If you’re visiting between December and March, bring insect repellent!!!! Sandflies in Fiordland are relentless, and forgetting bug spray will turn your experience from magical to miserable in seconds.
The best time to do this walk
I think the best time to do most walks in New Zealand is summer. Our days are longer from December to February, and the weather is warmer and generally less unpredictable.
That said, this track is short enough to be enjoyed all year round, but you'll need to be cautious of icy or slippery conditions in winter.
