Te Toto Gorge is one of the most stunning viewpoints I have ever visited. It’s just a 20-minute drive from Raglan on the rugged West Coast of New Zealand's North Island. The gorge boasts dramatic views of the Tasman Sea and surrounding cliffs.

The gorge was formed by volcanic activity and is known for its endless views of the ocean below. Te Toto Gorge is also a historically significant site for Māori, with remnants of ancient gardens from when early Māori settlers cultivated the area.

From the car park, it's an easy, short (100m) walk to the upper viewing platform. Here you'll get 180-degree, panoramic views of the gorge and coastline.

The best time to visit Te Toto Gorge

Because Raglan is on the west coast of the North Island, the best time to come to Te Toto Gorge is at sunset. I recommend arriving around an hour before to get a comfy spot on the grass. Make sure to bring a picnic! If you choose to visit at sunset, remember that this is the most popular time of day. Parking is fairly limited, so you should arrive as early as possible.

You can also visit Te Toto Gorge at midday when it's quieter. If you choose to do this, Te Toto Gorge and Mount Karioi share the same carpark, and I recommend walking up there too! This is a challenging hike with a relentless uphill climb, but it boasts unbeatable views across the coast, farmland and Raglan town centre. It is well worth doing while in Raglan if you’re up for a challenge!

How to get there

From Raglan, it is approximately 20 minutes (14 km) via Wainui Road. The gorge is accessible by car, but no public transport is there, so you’ll need your own vehicle.
