When I think of the Bay of Islands, I think of white-sand beaches, tropical islands, a day out on the water, sunny weather and hot chips at Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island.
If that sounds like your kind of adventure (and I think it should!), then Explore Group is the way to go. Their catamaran tours depart from Paihia and Russell, taking you to some of the region’s most iconic sights. Along the way, you’ll cruise past Motukokako Island/Piercy Island (Hole in the Rock) and, if you're lucky, spot dolphins, whales, seals, and native birdlife.
Then, you’ll stop for 1.5 hours on Urupukapuka Island—the largest of the 144 islands and hands-down my favourite. I grew up camping here every summer, so this place holds a special spot in my heart. During your stopover, you’ll enjoy a delicious Island Buffet Lunch at Otehei Bay Café & Bar. After lunch, you can swim, snorkel, hire a kayak, or explore one of the hiking trails. If you want to stretch your legs, I love the Cable Bay and Otehei Bay loop tracks. They’re short and scenic!
The catamaran has indoor and outdoor seating and massive viewing decks, perfect for soaking up the views and taking photos. There’s food available on board, but I’d personally hold out for Otehei Bay Café!
The tour lasts 4.5 hours, but you can arrange a later pick-up if you want more time to explore. Prices start at $90 for kids and $180 for adults.
