Waterfall

Message from Hannah Whittaker

Charlie's Rock Waterfall is a hidden gem near Kerikeri in the beautiful Bay of Islands. It's not as popular as the famous Rainbow Falls, but it’s a local favourite for swimming and rock jumping. There are a few different places to jump from, all with varying heights and rock steps to help you climb back up to the top of the falls.

How to get there

Getting to Charlie's Rock Waterfall isn't as straightforward as some other spots around the Bay of Islands as it's not signposted, and you'll need your own car. To get there, type “Charlie’s Rock” into Google Maps, which will take you close to the trailhead. Park at the large car park on your right, marked ‘Waipapa Landing.’ From the car park, cross the road and walk about 100m along Landing Road towards Kerikeri Centre. Look for a small sign that says ‘Welcome to Charlie’s Rock Walkway’, which signals your turnoff. The track to the waterhole takes about 10-15 minutes and winds through native bush. It’s not challenging, but there are some slippy sections and light rock climbing at the end.

Know before you go

Always be extremely careful when jumping into the water. Check the depth, look for hidden rocks, and make sure no one is below you before jumping.
