If there’s one walk in the Karangahake Gorge I never get tired of, it’s the Windows Walk. It’s a short and easy trail that takes about an hour. It's packed with history and offers stunning views overlooking the gorge.

The track starts at the Karangahake Gorge carpark, crosses a large bridge and then follows a path through native bush and old gold mining tunnels. Along the way, you’ll find “caves” and “windows” carved into the rock face. What makes this walk extra special is the rich gold mining history that is scattered along the way. You’ll also see rusted tramlines, machinery and the remains of the Talimans Battery.

How to get there

The track starts at the Karangahake Gorge car park, just off SH2 between Paeroa and Waihi. You'll pass through the gorge if you're driving between Auckland and Tauranga. It's well worth making time for a stop!
