An hour north of New Plymouth is one of the most unique coastal formations in New Zealand.
The Three Sisters are towering 25-metre rock formations that are seriously impressive. When you visit, you'll see there are just two rocks. The ocean claimed the third sister in 2003, and Elephant Rock lost its trunk in 2016. So, you better visit before it's too late!
If you want to walk down to the rocks, make sure you time your visit for two hours on either side of low tide. You have two great options for the best views.
Head to the lookout by parking at the end of Pilot Road and walk to the cliff edge, where you’ll get stunning panoramic views of the beach.
You can get close to the rocks by turning off State Highway 3 onto Clifton Road and parking at the domain. But, like I said, you can only choose this option if you time your visit with low tide.
How to get there
The Three Sisters are located north of Tongaporutu around an hour from New Plymouth. If you’re coming from Auckland, it’s a 4.5-hour drive down State Highway 3, and I highly recommend stopping here on your way to Taranaki.
